Is there public showers throughout Britain?
I was thinking of camping / traveling from the south-west of England, through Wales and to Scotland. While camping I will be using a lot of the time, and possibly a hostel / B & B or two along the way, I'll try to camp wild, too. (Yes, I know this is not always legal). So there are public showers in the UK, as there is no public toilets? Airports / showers, swimming pool not included, as I have no intention of being close to one or pay into a pool, but train stations would be nice, if such facilities in them .... I know it's possible to sneak into a bathroom camping without having to pay for a pitch, but I prefer to keep breaking the law to a minimum. And preferably not in the big cities, but welcome any information as where and how to find them, they are free, communal or private, thank you, etc. Ahem, I am British, actually. Not a "stupid foreigner" as Happy Murcia suggest.
There are a few stations in large cities and in places Fort William served as night trains bed. But not many of them, and are relatively expensive. In rural areas, some utilities have showers. This is not very common, and only in areas that are popular for camping, and away from big cities where they would vandalism. I have seen these in the Western Isles, which coin operated a cost of £ 1. Some hotels will allow you to use a shower for a fee. This is mainly in areas where the yachts visit. (The hotel wants to attract people staying in € 100k yachts, no tents £ 100!). There would be nothing wrong with asking an old style hotel (not one where all rooms have bath). Similarly you could ask for in shelters or campsites. Swimming pools and other sports facilities run Council are probably the best bet around to the country, and may be cheaper than the showers of the season. They are also perhaps more easily known in advance. Once you know the route, I would suggest calling the local tourist office and ask what is available in the area.
