camping state parks virginia

Good place to go camping / hiking for 3 days?
My boyfriend and I want out of spring break with a good hiking area with a lot of choices for the paths, and we prefer to be a national or state park to be away from noisy roads and such. We are in the PA, but we want to go south, so somewhere in Maryland, Virginia or North Carolina would be ideal. We were planning to go to the park from Shenandoah, but all the campsites that are closed. Can you recommend a good campsite with good hiking nearby (It's OK if we have to drive to the trailhead, just not too far!) I would leave this wood boring PA with anything higher, the dead trees!
Smoky Mountains is good, but campsites are closed right now, I would be the northern part of the park to escape the crowds and make the crossing ............
